From stuntman to TVB executive: the complex legacy of Eric Tsang
In short: Eric Tsang is a cornerstone of Hong Kong entertainment, known for his versatility in comedy and drama. Yet, his career is marked by significant contrasts—from being typecast as a bumbling sidekick to becoming a powerful television executive, all while navigating intense public controversies and personal family history.
Born in 1953, Eric Tsang began his entertainment journey as a stuntman before rising to prominence as a versatile actor, host, and producer. For years, he was frequently typecast in comedic roles as an 'ugly' and 'crude' sidekick. It was only after encouragement from his daughter, Bowie Tsang, that he pivoted toward serious drama, eventually winning a Hong Kong best actor award for a film starring Alan Tam. Critics have praised this transition, noting his ability to achieve 'egoless states' comparable to great character actors like Robert Duvall.
Tsang’s influence extends into the corporate structure of Hong Kong media. He served as the general manager of TVB starting in September 2021, overseeing content operations and variety programming. In early 2025, he received the "TVB Legendary Award of Glory" but announced his departure from the general manager role, transitioning to an advisory position. His public persona is also defined by his role as a host; his nickname "Prize Master" stems from his long tenure on the variety show Super Trio.
His life outside the spotlight is equally complex. He is a devout Buddhist and the son of Tsang Kai-wing, a former police officer who was convicted of corruption in 1976 and fled to Taiwan. More recently, Tsang has faced severe public scrutiny following allegations of sexual assault surfaced in 2018 via an unedited interview with actress Yammie Lam. While Tsang denied these claims and filed a defamation lawsuit against talent agent Grace Han, the allegations remain a significant point of contention in his public legacy.
The duality of his career is further reflected in his personal life: he has been married twice, with children living across Taiwan, Canada, and Hong Kong. Despite the controversies surrounding his conduct as a pageant host and various legal battles, Tsang remains a central figure in the evolution of Hong Kong's television and cinematic landscape.
