How a $40 Million Animated Film Survived a Legal War Before Even Reaching Theaters
In short: Escape from Planet Earth was a 2013 science fiction comedy that faced more drama behind the scenes than on screen. While the film grossed over $74 million, its path to release was marred by a contentious lawsuit involving producers, financiers, and allegations of hush money payments during production.
The 2013 animated feature Escape from Planet Earth follows the adventures of two brothers from the planet Baab: the reckless astronaut Scorch Supernova and his pragmatic brother, Gary. When Scorch is captured by the US military at a 7-Eleven and taken to Area 51, Gary must embark on a rescue mission. The film features a star-studded voice cast, including Brendan Fraser, Rob Corddry, and William Shatner, who portrays the villainous General Shanker.
Behind the scenes, the project was mired in conflict. Writer-director Tony Leech and producer Brian Inerfeld sued The Weinstein Company, alleging that the studio repeatedly forced script rewrites—at least 17 times—which ballooned the budget by keeping hundreds of animators on the payroll. The plaintiffs claimed this mismanagement threatened their promised share of the film's profits. The dispute even involved accusations that the studio paid $500,000 in hush money to prevent the conflict from overshadowing a 2011 Oscar win.
The financial structure of the film became further complicated when The Weinstein Company sought outside capital from JTM, granting the financiers a significant portion of the film's gross receipts. Leech and Inerfeld argued that this agreement unfairly mortgaged their own financial interests. The legal battle concluded on the very day the film premiered in February 2013, when both parties filed a motion of discontinuance, agreeing to cover their own legal expenses without disclosing settlement details.
Critical reception was largely lukewarm, with many reviewers describing the film as a harmless but uninspired effort. While some praised the visual quality and voice acting, others criticized the stale script and lack of humor. Despite the negative reviews, the film performed moderately well at the box office, ultimately grossing approximately $74.6 million worldwide against its $40 million budget.
