How a prison security expert became the blueprint for his own high-tech incarceration
In short: Ray Breslin makes a living breaking out of supermax prisons to expose their flaws. But when he is hired to test a secret, for-profit facility, he finds himself trapped in a floating fortress built specifically to contain him, using his own published security theories as the design manual.
In the 2013 thriller Escape Plan, Sylvester Stallone stars as Ray Breslin, a lawyer turned security consultant who specializes in escaping from high-security prisons. Driven by the personal tragedy of losing his family to a convict he once prosecuted, Breslin operates by posing as an inmate to identify structural and procedural weaknesses. His career takes a dark turn when he accepts a lucrative contract from a CIA operative to test a mysterious, off-the-grid facility. The mission goes wrong when he is drugged and stripped of his tracking technology, waking up in a prison known as The Tomb.
The Tomb is a marvel of modern surveillance, featuring rotating cell blocks with transparent walls and guards hidden behind black masks. Breslin soon discovers that the prison is not a government facility but a private, for-profit enterprise. His predicament is compounded by the revelation that his business partner, Lester Clark, betrayed him to seize control of their firm. To make matters worse, the warden, Willard Hobbes, reveals that the prison’s architecture was directly inspired by Breslin’s own book on security design, effectively turning the expert’s life work into his own cage.
The film, directed by Mikael Håfström, is notable for being the first to feature Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger as co-leads. Despite mixed critical reception—with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 50% rating—the film found significant success in international markets, grossing $137 million worldwide against a budget of $54–70 million. The production, which originally carried the working title The Tomb, eventually spawned two direct-to-video sequels, Escape Plan 2: Hades and Escape Plan: The Extractors, cementing the franchise's legacy as a high-concept action series that plays on the audience's fascination with the 'old-school' star power of its leads.
