When a game of wits becomes a lethal trap for the unsuspecting
In short: In the 2019 psychological thriller Escape Room, six strangers are lured into a high-stakes competition by the mysterious Minos corporation. What begins as a quest for a $10,000 prize quickly devolves into a desperate fight for survival, as each room is meticulously designed to exploit their darkest personal traumas.
Directed by Adam Robitel, the film follows a group of diverse participants—including a physics student, a daytrader, and a veteran—who discover that their shared history as sole survivors of various disasters is no coincidence. Minos, a shadowy organization, orchestrates these deadly scenarios for the entertainment of wealthy spectators who bet on the outcomes. The rooms are crafted by a 'Puzzle Maker' to reflect the specific past experiences of the players, turning their memories into instruments of death.
The production, which began under the working title The Maze, was filmed in South Africa between late 2017 and January 2018. Despite a modest production budget of $9 million, the film became a commercial success, grossing over $155.7 million worldwide. Its release was not without controversy; in Poland, the film’s debut was indefinitely postponed following a tragic fire at a real-life escape room facility that occurred on the same day as the United States premiere.
Critical reception remained mixed, with many reviewers praising the film's tense atmosphere and production design while noting that it failed to fully capitalize on its high-concept premise. Nevertheless, the film's financial performance secured its future, leading to the 2021 sequel, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions. The original ending, which Robitel initially envisioned as a simpler return home for a survivor, was ultimately revised to heighten the menace of the antagonists and set the stage for the ongoing franchise.
