The theme park that turned a family firm into a global empire
In short: From a 1972 trip to the United States to a world-renowned destination, Europa-Park was born from a family's vision to showcase their own engineering. Today, it stands as a massive cultural tapestry, blending high-tech roller coasters with immersive, authentic recreations of European heritage.
Since 1880, the Mack lineage has manufactured rides and amusements for eight successive generations, forming the basis of the park's history. In 1972, Franz Mack and his son Roland were inspired by American amusement parks to create a similar exhibition site in Germany. The project was originally intended for Breisach, but due to flooding hazards, it moved 30 kilometres north to Rust. The park officially opened on July 12, 1975, covering just 16 hectares and attracting 250,000 visitors in its inaugural year.
What distinguishes Europa-Park is its commitment to authentic regionality. While many parks use generic themes, 18 of its 21 areas are designed to authentically feature specific European countries and regions. The Switzerland zone was designed using the layout of Grimentz, a village located in the mountains of Switzerland. The park also balances these cultural landmarks with high-octane engineering, featuring unique 'drum lift' roller coasters like Euro-Mir and Eurosat, which use a rotating body and gripper arm to transport cars upward on spirally laid rails.
The resort has evolved into a multi-media powerhouse. Beyond the gates, the Mack family founded MackMedia in 2002 to produce films, music videos, and games, while a sister company, Tacumeon Rides, specializes in marketing media-based attractions like the 'Snorri Tours' dark ride. Despite facing challenges like a major fire in 2018 and the COVID-19 pandemic, the park remains a dominant force, recently surpassing 6 million annual visitors and maintaining its status as a top-ranked destination for theme park enthusiasts worldwide.
