The theme park born from a child's disappointment
In short: In 1941, an industrialist visited a town named Santa Claus and was annoyed that no Santa Claus was actually there to greet the children. This minor grievance sparked a retirement project that would eventually grow into a multi-holiday destination featuring world-record water coasters and some of the highest-rated wooden roller coasters on earth.
The park, originally called Santa Claus Land, was conceived by Louis J. Koch as a way to ensure children could visit Santa year-round. Construction began in 1945, and the park opened on August 3, 1946. For nearly four decades, it remained a Christmas-centric destination. It wasn't until 1984 that the Koch family expanded the concept, adding Halloween and Fourth of July sections and officially rebranding the park as Holiday World.
The park's evolution is marked by a shift from a children-only focus to a family-wide appeal. While the Christmas section remains the oldest, the park has aggressively pursued engineering records. This includes 'The Voyage,' a wooden coaster that held the record for the most airtime of any wooden coaster (24.3 seconds), and 'Mammoth,' a water coaster that holds a Guinness World Record for length at 1,763 feet.
The park also notably includes 'Pilgrims Plunge,' which was once the world's tallest water ride, utilizing an open-air elevator system rather than a traditional lift hill. The park's history is also defined by family dynamics and corporate shifts. Following the death of president Will Koch in 2010, a legal battle for control of the park ensued between his widow and his siblings. While the widow won primary ownership, his brother Dan and sister Natalie formed a separate company to acquire other parks. Today, the park continues to expand, recently announcing 'Stuffing Springs' for 2023 and a new water coaster, 'Cannonball!', slated for 2027.
