Why a star-studded 1994 Western became one of the most panned films in history
In short: Directed by Gus Van Sant and based on a cult novel, the 1994 film Even Cowgirls Get the Blues was a massive commercial and critical disaster. Despite an ensemble cast including Uma Thurman and Keanu Reeves, the production struggled with post-production edits, negative reviews, and a legacy of infamy.
Released in May 1994, the film was an adaptation of Tom Robbins' 1976 novel. The plot follows Sissy Hankshaw, a hitchhiker with unusually large thumbs who finds herself at the Rubber Rose Ranch, where cowgirls clash with government agencies over a flock of endangered whooping cranes. Despite the involvement of high-profile actors and a soundtrack by k.d. lang, the project faced immediate trouble. After a disappointing screening at the 1993 Toronto International Film Festival, director Gus Van Sant delayed the release to perform extensive re-edits, cutting scenes involving Keanu Reeves and removing a subplot about the Clock People.
The final product was a significant financial failure, grossing only about $1.7 million against an estimated $8.5 million budget. Critics were particularly harsh; Leonard Maltin famously remarked that there was not enough peyote in the Southwest to make the movie endurable. The film appeared on numerous 'worst of' lists, including those from The New York Times and Rolling Stone. Uma Thurman and Sean Young even received Golden Raspberry Award nominations for their performances, though neither won.
Beyond the critical drubbing, the film became a subject of persistent rumors. Many viewers insisted that River Phoenix, to whom the film was dedicated, appeared in a brief cameo. However, Van Sant, costar Udo Kier, and Phoenix's assistant Sue Solgot all confirmed that the actor was not in the film, identifying the figure in the beekeeper's hat as Jim Baldwin. While the film remains a footnote in cinema history, its soundtrack found more success, reaching the top ten in Australia and the top five in New Zealand.
