In short: For twenty-two years, Kodansha's Evening magazine served as a vital home for seinen manga. From its origins as a special issue to its eventual merger back into the Morning editorial department, the publication shaped the landscape of Japanese comics before closing its doors in early 2023.

Evening, known in Japan as Ibuningu, began its life in 2001 as a monthly publication titled Morning Shin Magnum Zōkan. It was initially conceived as a sister magazine to Morning, but the publication underwent a significant transformation in 2003 when its editorial department achieved independence. Following this shift, the magazine rebranded as Evening and transitioned to a biweekly release schedule, hitting newsstands on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month.

The magazine cultivated a diverse library of serialized titles, ranging from long-running dramas like K2 by Kazuo Mafune, which spanned from 2004 to 2023, to the agricultural comedy Moyasimon: Tales of Agriculture by Masayuki Ishikawa. At its peak, the magazine maintained a substantial readership; in 2015, the Japan Magazine Publishers Association reported a circulation of 115,617 copies. This reach allowed it to host a variety of genres, including sports, negotiation thrillers, and character-driven narratives.

In December 2022, Kodansha announced the end of the magazine's independent run. The final issue was published on February 28, 2023, marking the conclusion of its twenty-two-year history. Rather than disappearing entirely, the magazine's editorial department merged back into the Morning team. Several ongoing series, such as K2, Shojo Fight, and Battle Angel Alita: Mars Chronicle, were transitioned to Kodansha's digital platform, Comic Days, ensuring that the stories serialized within Evening's pages found a continued home for their readers.

The legacy of Evening is defined by its ability to adapt, moving from a monthly special issue to a biweekly staple of the industry. By providing a platform for creators like Kenshi Hirokane, whose Shima Kōsaku series appeared in various iterations throughout the magazine's lifespan, and Yukito Kishiro, it played a crucial role in the evolution of seinen manga. Its closure reflects the broader shifts in the publishing industry, where digital migration has become a standard strategy for maintaining long-term serialization.
