How a British Men's Lifestyle Magazine Conquered Global Newsstands Before the Digital Shift
In short: Launched in 1985 as For Him Magazine, this publication evolved from a niche quarterly into a global powerhouse. By dominating the men's market with iconic features like the 100 Sexiest Women list, it became a cultural touchstone before transitioning to a digital-only format in 2016. Discover its rise and legacy.
The publication began in 1985 in the United Kingdom under the name For Him Magazine. While it rebranded to the punchier FHM in May 1992, the original full title remained a fixture on the spine of every issue. Initially a quarterly, the magazine expanded its reach to newsagents by the spring of 1987 and eventually shifted to a monthly release schedule in 1994.
The year 1994 marked a pivotal turning point when EMAP Consumer Media acquired the title. Under this new ownership, the magazine surged to dominate the British men's lifestyle market and launched an aggressive international expansion, eventually publishing in 32 countries, including India. A key component of its brand identity was the focus on female cover stars, a trend that began in February 1993 with Gina Bellman and quickly grew to include high-profile figures like Naomi Campbell and Andie MacDowell.
Beyond its standard editorial content, the magazine cultivated engagement through competitions such as the High Street Honey, which launched in 2002. Winners received a £10,000 prize, a presenting role on FHM TV, and a coveted spot on the magazine's front cover. This interactive approach extended to its famous rankings of the sexiest women alive, which relied on public and editorial voting.
The landscape for print media eventually shifted, leading to the announcement on 17 November 2015 that British FHM would suspend its print operations. The final physical edition was released in February 2016, featuring Holly Willoughby on the cover. Following this, the brand transitioned to a digital-only platform under BauerXcel Media, focusing on daily updates covering style, sports, and viral news.
