The world's oldest aviation magazine, Flight International, has finally grounded its printed edition.
In short: For over a century, Flight International served as the definitive chronicle of aerospace progress. From its 1909 debut as the official journal of the Royal Aero Club to its final quarterly print run in 2025, the publication tracked the evolution of flight through changing ownership and shifting industry landscapes.
Founded in 1909 by Stanley Spooner, Flight emerged as a dedicated offshoot of The Automotor Journal. Spooner, who had previously integrated aeronautical sections into his automotive publication, recognized the need for a specialized voice in the burgeoning field of aerial locomotion. His early connections, including a friendship with Griffith Brewer, allowed the magazine to secure exclusive insights, such as the 1908 patent drawings of the Wright brothers' aircraft, which appeared in his earlier journal.
The publication underwent significant transformations throughout its 117-year history. Originally a weekly, it became the official organ of the Aero Club of the United Kingdom and later expanded its reach through strategic acquisitions and mergers, including the 1968 integration of Aeroplane. Ownership shifted from Iliffe & Sons to RELX, and finally to DVV Media Group in 2019. These transitions mirrored the consolidation and technological shifts within the aerospace sector itself, positioning the magazine alongside industry stalwarts like Aviation Week & Space Technology.
The magazine's operational cadence evolved alongside the digital age. After more than a century as a weekly staple, it transitioned to a monthly format in 2020 and eventually to a quarterly schedule in 2025. By the end of 2025, the decision was made to discontinue the printed version entirely. This move marked the end of an era for the world's oldest continuously published aviation news magazine, closing a chapter that began when the Wright brothers' innovations were still fresh news and aviation was in its infancy.
