A wedding, a kidnapping, and the unraveling of a family's long-buried secrets
In short: When Laura returns to her Spanish hometown for a wedding, her daughter is abducted, triggering a desperate search for ransom money. As the family scrambles, the investigation exposes deep-seated resentments and a hidden paternity that threatens to destroy the fragile bonds holding everyone together in this taut, expertly crafted thriller.
Directed by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, the 2018 mystery-drama Everybody Knows centers on Laura, a woman living in Buenos Aires who returns to her small hometown near Madrid for her sister's wedding. The celebration turns into a nightmare when her teenage daughter, Irene, vanishes from her room. A ransom demand for 300,000 euros forces the family into a frantic, secretive search, as they fear police involvement will lead to the girl's death.
The investigation, aided by a retired police officer named Jorge, quickly turns inward. Tensions rise between Laura and her old friend Paco, whose vineyards were purchased from Laura years prior. The situation escalates when Laura reveals to Paco that Irene is actually his biological daughter, conceived during a brief encounter sixteen years earlier. This revelation complicates the ransom effort, as Paco prepares to sell his estate to pay for the girl's release, while his wife, Bea, suspects Laura of orchestrating the kidnapping to extract money from him.
The truth behind the abduction is far more intimate than a simple crime. It is eventually revealed that Laura's niece, Rocío, along with her estranged husband Gabriel and a local barber named Luis, orchestrated the kidnapping. While the family eventually secures Irene's safe return, the emotional fallout is permanent. The film, which premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and stars Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem, explores how long-held secrets and local gossip can poison family dynamics, leaving the characters to face the irreparable damage caused by their collective history.
The production, a French-Spanish-Italian collaboration, began principal photography in August 2017. Despite receiving generally favorable reviews, critics were divided on the film's overall impact. While some praised the performances and the tension of the narrative, others felt it did not reach the heights of Farhadi's previous work. Ultimately, the story serves as a study of how the truth, once exposed, can irrevocably alter the course of a family's future.
