A wedding dress, a skull mask, and a twenty-year-old secret in Carora
In short: In the 2002 Venezuelan telenovela La mujer de Judas, a group of friends commits a crime that haunts them for decades. When the accused heiress is finally released from prison, a mysterious figure in a bridal gown begins terrorizing the town, forcing a young reporter to uncover the truth.
Created by Martin Hahn for RCTV, the series spans 125 episodes and centers on the life of Altagracia del Toro. Years prior, Altagracia and her five friends accidentally killed a man who attempted to assault one of them in a family wine distillery. After their parish priest, Padre Sebastian, witnessed the event and was later found dead, Altagracia was imprisoned for the murder. The townspeople of Carora remained hostile toward her, viewing her as a pariah long after the incident.
Two decades later, the narrative shifts to Gloria Leal, an aspiring reporter seeking a subject for her graduation documentary. Despite her mother Juaca’s intense opposition, Gloria investigates the cold case, eventually befriending Salomon, the officer in charge of the Del Toro winery. As their investigation deepens, a masked killer dressed in a wedding gown emerges, systematically eliminating those who know the truth about the past. While the town immediately blames Altagracia, the police find no evidence connecting her to the new wave of violence.
The mystery culminates in a revelation that redefines the series: Altagracia herself is the figure behind the mask. Having spent twenty years incarcerated for a crime she was blamed for, she returns to exact vengeance on those who abandoned her to suffer. The show’s success led to international distribution by RCTV International and inspired a Mexican adaptation produced by TV Azteca 13, starring Andrea Marti, Victor Gonzalez, and Anette Michel, proving the enduring appeal of this dark, suspenseful tale of betrayal and retribution.
