A sci-fi classic was rushed to theaters before its director could finish the story.
In short: Joe Dante's 1985 film Explorers remains a beloved cult favorite, yet it was never the movie its creator intended. Forced by studio executives to abandon editing for a summer release, the production left massive plot holes and missing subplots, turning a visionary project into a hurried, unfinished cinematic experiment.
When Paramount executives demanded a July 1985 release, director Joe Dante was forced to stop editing, leaving roughly ninety minutes of footage on the cutting room floor. The pressure was so intense that the production environment became chaotic; sets were painted so hastily that actors sank into wet cement while filming. Dante later admitted that the final product was not the film he had envisioned, as he and writer Eric Luke had been improvising the narrative while the cameras were still rolling.
The film's troubled timeline was exacerbated by its release date. It debuted on July 12, 1985, just one day before the massive Live Aid concert and less than two weeks after the blockbuster success of Back to the Future. These factors, combined with a lack of a cohesive third act, led to a disappointing box office performance of under $10 million. Critics at the time were divided, often describing the film as charming but thin, a sentiment reflected in its mixed scores on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic.
Despite its rocky start, the film found a second life through VHS and cable, eventually developing a dedicated cult following. Fans have long been fascinated by its eccentric blend of pop culture references, from Looney Tunes-inspired character names to sound effects borrowed from Atari games. While Dante has searched for the lost footage to restore his original vision, those scenes remain missing. Today, the film stands as a unique artifact of 1980s science fiction, remembered as much for its chaotic production history as for the performances of young stars Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix.
