The superhero who is actually a dual-identity fusion of two people
In short: Most superheroes have a secret identity, but Firestorm is a literal merger. Created by Gerry Conway and Al Milgrom, this DC Comics hero fuses a high school student with a Nobel Prize-winning physicist to create a single, incredibly powerful entity. It is a unique take on the teenage hero trope.
Created in March 1978, Firestorm was born from an accident that fused high schooler Ronnie Raymond with the brilliant physicist Martin Stein. This created a unique dynamic: Raymond typically controlled the physical form, while Stein acted as a voice of reason inside his mind, offering advice without having direct physical control. This banter became a hallmark of their adventures.
The character's design was influenced by Jack Kirby's Lightray, specifically regarding the facemask that wraps around the chin. While the character's name and concept evoke nuclear power—emerging during the tensions of the Cold War—creator Gerry Conway has noted that the interpersonal dynamic between Raymond and Stein was intended to be more central than the nuclear theme itself.
The character has undergone several radical transformations. In 1989, writer John Ostrander revealed Firestorm to be a 'Fire Elemental,' a shift that saw the character become an environmental crusader. Following Ronnie Raymond's death in the Identity Crisis event, a second Firestorm emerged: Jason Rusch. This modern iteration, introduced in July 2004, also saw Stein link with Rusch to form a new matrix, seeking the maturity needed to master his powers.
The character's history is marked by significant shifts in continuity and publication. The original series was short-lived, falling victim to the 'DC Implosion' after only five issues. Later, the character was featured in various media, including The CW's Arrowverse, where the fusion was portrayed by actors such as Robbie Amell and Victor Garber.
