The hybrid heir who ended a cosmic war through marriage
In short: Born from a forbidden union between Kree and Skrull royalty, Hulkling was originally intended to be a female character. Instead, he became a cornerstone of Marvel's LGBTQ+ representation, eventually ascending to the throne of a unified galactic alliance.
Created in 2005 by writer Allan Heinberg and artist Jim Cheung for the Young Avengers series, Hulkling was designed to mirror the motifs of the original Avengers. While his visual design draws inspiration from the Hulk, his true lineage is far more complex. He is the son of the Kree hero Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell) and the Skrull princess Anelle, a union that made him a unique hybrid with abilities exceeding those of ordinary members of either race.
His powers are a direct result of this genetic cocktail. From his Skrull heritage, he derives shapeshifting abilities that allow him to grow wings for flight, manifest claws, or create body armor. This shapeshifting even functions subconsciously to protect his vital organs. From his Kree background, he inherits superhuman strength and an accelerated healing factor. His body can withstand high-caliber bullets, bladed weapons, and massive impact forces without injury.
The character's development also marked a significant shift in Marvel's editorial direction. Originally pitched as a female character who would use shapeshifting to pose as a man, the creators ultimately decided to maintain Hulkling as a male character to increase LGBT representation. This resulted in a famous romance involving his teammate, Wiccan. Their relationship has become central to major Marvel crossovers, such as the 2020 Empyre event, where their marriage helped bring an end to the Kree–Skrull War—a conflict that had been a mainstay of the Marvel Universe since 1971.
Ultimately, Hulkling accepted his destiny as the ruler of the Kree–Skrull Alliance, taking the regnal name Emperor Dorrek VIII.
