How an animated documentary broke the mold to tell a hidden refugee story
In short: Flee is a groundbreaking 2021 film that uses animation to protect the identity of a man sharing his traumatic escape from Afghanistan. By blending personal testimony with archival footage, it became the first feature ever nominated for Oscars in the documentary, animated, and international film categories simultaneously.
Directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen, the film centers on Amin Nawabi, a high school friend who had kept his past as a refugee secret for decades. Amin’s journey began in Kabul during the Soviet–Afghan War, leading to a harrowing series of displacements through Russia and eventually to Denmark. Because he arrived as a minor, he was instructed to claim he was an orphan to avoid deportation, a lie he maintained even from his partner, Kasper. The animation serves a dual purpose: it provides the visual language to recount events where no footage exists, while also ensuring Amin’s anonymity, allowing him to speak with a vulnerability that might otherwise be impossible.
The production process was a massive undertaking, involving a core team of ten animators in Denmark and a coloring department in France. To achieve a mature, graphic-novel aesthetic, the team focused on specific brushwork and character acting, ensuring the visual style matched the gravity of the subject matter. This artistic choice paid off, as the film received widespread critical acclaim, holding a 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was lauded for its innovative storytelling, which pushes the boundaries of the documentary genre by integrating personal memoir with historical context.
Beyond its critical success, the film achieved historic recognition during the 2021 awards season. It was the first animated documentary to win the top prize at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and the Best Animated Feature – Independent award at the 49th Annie Awards. Its unique status as a hybrid work led to its unprecedented triple-nomination at the Academy Awards. By the time Amin finally reunites with his family and settles down in a home with Kasper, the film has successfully documented not just a flight from war, but a long, complex process of self-discovery and the search for a place to belong.
