Why Aardman Animations abandoned its signature claymation style for a single high-budget film
In short: Known for the tactile charm of stop-motion clay, Aardman Animations made a radical pivot for their 2006 film Flushed Away. By shifting to all-3D CGI, the studio traded its iconic plasticine models for digital water, a decision that ultimately reshaped the studio's future and ended a major Hollywood partnership.
The transition from traditional claymation to 3D CGI was a pragmatic necessity rather than a stylistic preference. Aardman Animations had built its reputation on stop-motion, but the script for Flushed Away—conceived by director Sam Fell during the production of Chicken Run—demanded a setting dominated by water. Animating water using plasticine models was technically complex and risked damaging the delicate figures. To avoid the prohibitive costs of compositing CGI into physical sets, the studio opted for a fully digital approach for the first time.
Despite the technical innovation, the film struggled to find its footing at the box office. Produced on a budget of $149 million, it grossed $178.2 million worldwide, resulting in an estimated $109 million loss for the studios. This financial disappointment, coupled with a turbulent creative relationship, led to the termination of the collaboration between Aardman and DreamWorks Animation. The film was the third and final project in their partnership, following Chicken Run and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.
Critical reception was mixed but generally favorable, with the film holding a 72% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While some critics praised the dazzling action sequences enabled by digital animation, others felt the film lacked the unique, quirky charm of Aardman's previous work. Despite the commercial failure, the project was recognized for its craft, earning five Annie Awards, including honors for screenplay and Ian McKellen's voice performance as the villainous Toad. By October 2010, the film had sold 4.9 million units on home media, marking a distinct chapter in the studio's history.
