Aki Kaurismäki’s 2017 comedy-drama offers a poignant, empathetic look at the refugee experience
In short: In a story of unlikely connection, a Finnish businessman and a Syrian asylum-seeker cross paths in Helsinki. Through humor and melancholy, the film challenges perspectives on displacement, ultimately serving as a testament to human decency and the possibility of finding hope in the most harrowing of circumstances.
Directed by Aki Kaurismäki, The Other Side of Hope follows two parallel lives that collide in Helsinki. Waldemar, a traveling shirt salesman, abandons his life and business to purchase a restaurant. Simultaneously, Khaled, a Syrian refugee who arrived in Finland as a stowaway, navigates the complexities of the asylum system while searching for his sister, Miriam, who was separated from him during their journey through the Balkans.
The film’s production was deeply personal for lead actor Sherwan Haji, who drew on his own experiences to portray Khaled. Kaurismäki, who intended for this to be his final directorial work before returning years later with Fallen Leaves, sought to shift public perception regarding refugees. The title itself was inspired by an ancient Greek poem, chosen for its poetic resonance over the working title, The Refugee.
Upon its 2017 release, the film garnered universal acclaim, winning the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival. Critics praised its ability to balance harrowing plot developments with offhand gags. As noted by A. O. Scott, the work stands as a clearsighted declaration of faith in both humanity and the power of cinema itself.
The narrative concludes with a moment of quiet resilience. Despite being the victim of a violent, racially motivated attack, Khaled is found by Waldemar sitting by a river, smiling as a dog approaches him. This final image encapsulates the film’s central thesis: a belief in the endurance of human kindness, even when faced with the harsh realities of the world.
