Can a mind create a false reality to escape a traumatic truth?
In short: In the psychological thriller Fractured, a man arrives at a hospital with his injured family, only to find the staff denies they ever existed. As he fights to uncover the truth, the film forces viewers to question whether the hospital is hiding a conspiracy or if his own mind is fracturing.
Directed by Brad Anderson and written by Alan B. McElroy, the 2019 film Fractured follows Ray Monroe, played by Sam Worthington, as he navigates a harrowing medical mystery. After a roadside accident leaves his daughter Peri with a broken arm, Ray takes his family to a nearby hospital. Following a CAT scan, Ray wakes up in the waiting room to find that the staff has no record of his wife, Joanne, or his daughter. His desperate search for answers leads to a violent confrontation with hospital security and police, as he becomes convinced of a sinister organ-harvesting plot.
The narrative takes a dark turn when it is revealed that the hospital events were a psychological defense mechanism. In reality, Ray’s family died during the initial accident at the gas station. His mind, unable to process the trauma of his wife’s death and his daughter’s fatal fall, constructed an elaborate scenario to deny the truth. By the film's conclusion, it is shown that Ray has been driving with his deceased family in the car, while the person he 'rescued' from the hospital was actually an unrelated patient.
Critics offered mixed assessments of the film upon its release. While some reviewers appreciated the attempt to innovate within the thriller genre, others found the plot predictable and lacking in energy. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 56% approval rating from critics, while Metacritic assigned it a score of 36 out of 100. Despite the polarized reception, the film remains a notable exploration of how the human psyche can distort perception to shield itself from unbearable grief.
Production for the project began in December 2018, with filming occurring in Winnipeg, Manitoba, between November 2018 and January 2019. The film debuted at Fantastic Fest in late September 2019 before arriving on Netflix the following month. The cast includes Lily Rabe, Stephen Tobolowsky, Adjoa Andoh, and Lucy Capri, all of whom joined the production in December 2018.
