In short: In the stark landscape of Upstate New York, two women from vastly different worlds form a desperate alliance. Bound by economic hardship and a fierce, universal love for their children, they turn to smuggling across the frozen St. Lawrence River, testing the limits of survival and sacrifice in this acclaimed drama.

Directed by Courtney Hunt in her 2008 feature debut, Frozen River explores the intersection of motherhood and survival. The story follows Ray Eddy, a struggling clerk, and Lila Littlewolf, a Mohawk bingo-parlor employee. Both women, facing dire financial straits, begin smuggling undocumented immigrants across the ice of the St. Lawrence River. The film draws inspiration from local stories Hunt heard near Malone, New York, about residents smuggling cigarettes across the frozen border.

The production was a grueling endeavor, filmed over twenty-four days in March 2007 in sub-freezing temperatures across Clinton County and the area around Plattsburgh. Hunt initially struggled to secure funding, as the subject matter was unfamiliar to many investors. After producing a short film at the Akwesasne reservation to generate interest, she eventually secured the budget to complete the feature. The film premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize.

Critical reception was overwhelmingly positive, with Melissa Leo’s performance receiving widespread praise. Critics noted the film’s social realism and its refusal to grind political axes, focusing instead on the individual courage of its protagonists. While the film grossed over $5.1 million worldwide, its lasting impact lies in its exploration of a mother's love as a culturally universal trait. Hunt intended for the film to challenge audience assumptions, highlighting how the intimacy of motherhood transcends social and cultural boundaries.
