In short: The 1994 thriller The River Wild combined intense river stunts with a tense hostage plot. While audiences praised the performances of Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon, the production was physically grueling, leading to a dangerous on-set accident that forced the director to reconsider his demands on his lead actress.

Directed by Curtis Hanson, The River Wild follows a family whose rafting trip turns into a fight for survival after they are taken hostage by two armed fugitives. The film, released on September 30, 1994, earned over $94 million worldwide. Critics were divided on the plot, with Roger Ebert noting that while the cinematography was impressive, the story relied on predictable tropes and implausible sequences, such as the father, played by David Strathairn, racing the river on foot.

The production was a massive logistical undertaking. Principal photography began on August 4, 1993, utilizing various locations including the Kootenai River and the Middle Fork of the Flathead River in Montana. Because of the extreme nature of the whitewater sequences, the studio hired professional river guides to perform major stunts. While Meryl Streep performed some of her own stunts on milder sections of the river, expert guide Kelley Kalafatich served as her stunt double for the most dangerous sequences.

The intensity of the shoot occasionally boiled over. In one instance, Hanson requested that an exhausted Streep film an additional scene. Despite her objections, she attempted the shot, only to be swept off the raft and into the water. Though she was saved by her flotation device and the rescue team, the incident served as a stark reminder of the risks involved. Streep later confronted the director, insisting that he trust her judgment regarding her physical limits.

The film's legacy continues to evolve. In 2003, the American Film Institute nominated Streep's character, Gail, for its list of 100 Years...100 Heroes & Villains. Nearly three decades later, in July 2022, it was revealed that a new story set in the same universe had entered production. This standalone sequel, titled River Wild, was released in August 2023, proving that the original film's blend of high-stakes tension and natural beauty remains a touchstone for the genre.
