The voice of a bear and a Broadway icon
In short: Georgia Engel was a versatile powerhouse who seamlessly pivoted from the high-stakes world of Broadway to providing the distinctive voice for a beloved animated bear. Her career spanned over five decades, bridging the gap between classic live theater and modern family animation.
Born in 1948, Engel trained at the Academy of the Washington Ballet and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In 1969, she relocated to New York City following a stint with Washington's American Light Opera Company, where she achieved fame in 'Hello, Dolly!'. She became a household name as Georgette Franklin Baxter on 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' (1972–1977) and earned three consecutive Emmy nominations for 'Everybody Loves Raymond' (2003–2005). Engel also voiced roles in 'Dr. Dolittle 2' and the 'Open Season' trilogy. She later created the role of Mrs. Tottendale in 'The Drowsy Chaperone' and won a 2016 Obie Award for 'John'. She remained a Christian Science adherent until her death in 2019.
Engel's career was a testament to the enduring power of versatile performance. From her early days in the Academy of the Washington Ballet to her theater degree at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, she built a foundation of discipline. This allowed her to navigate the transition from the American Light Opera Company to the bright lights of Broadway. Her television presence was equally substantial. Even as she moved into different eras of television, her talent remained sharp. She earned three consecutive Emmy nominations for her role as Pat MacDougall on 'Everybody Loves Raymond' (2003–2005) and appeared in various other notable series like 'Hot in Cleveland' and 'The Office.' Perhaps most surprising to some was her contribution to animation. The 1985 film 'The Care Bears Movie' featured Engel as the voice of Love-a-Lot Bear, and she also voiced roles in 'Dr. Dolittle 2' (2001) and the 'Open Season' films (2006–2010). This ability to inhabit different personas—from the sophisticated Georgette to a gentle animated bear—showcased her range. She concluded her career with a triumphant return to the stage, creating the role of Mrs. Tottendale in 'The Drowsy Chaperone' and winning a 2016 Obie Award for her lead role in the play 'John.'
She was granted a 2016 Obie Award for her performance in the production of John.
