In the 2026 film Goat, anthropomorphic animals compete in a high-stakes sport called roarball.
In short: Will Harris, a teenage pygmy goat, dreams of professional glory in the basketball-inspired sport of roarball. After a viral video launches him onto the struggling Vineland Thorns, he must navigate team politics, a cynical owner, and his own idol to help his squad reach the championship and secure their future.
Directed by Tyree Dillihay and produced by Sony Pictures Animation, Goat premiered in February 2026. The film follows Will Harris, voiced by Caleb McLaughlin, as he transitions from a diner worker struggling with rent to a key player for the Thorns. His journey is complicated by his idol, the star black panther Jett Fillmore, and the team's owner, a sleazy warthog named Florence Everson. The narrative centers on the team's quest to win the Claw, the league's championship trophy, while facing off against the rival Lava Coast Magma.
The film's visual identity draws inspiration from street art and graffiti, utilizing animation techniques previously seen in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Production designer Jang Lee cited films like Do the Right Thing and City of God as key aesthetic influences. To ensure authenticity, graphic designer Emily Morgan spent over 500 hours across 600 drafts to create the team logos, while costume designer Dominique Dawson tailored animal outfits to match the specific anatomy and personalities of the characters.
Beyond the central conflict, the film features a sprawling cast of anthropomorphic athletes, including an Indian rhinoceros enforcer and a Komodo dragon teammate. The production, which had been in development since 2019, also incorporates real-world basketball figures; Stephen Curry, who produced the film, makes his acting debut as a giraffe named Lenny Williamson. Following its release, the film earned $195.3 million worldwide and received generally positive reviews, concluding with a surprising twist where the team's ownership is settled during a game of Uno.
