How a German Business Daily Attempted to Conquer the English-Speaking World
In short: Handelsblatt is a cornerstone of German financial journalism, based in Düsseldorf and established in 1946. While it remains a dominant voice in local business circles, its ambitious attempt to capture an international audience through an English-language digital edition ultimately collapsed, revealing the stark challenges of cross-border media expansion.
Founded in 1946 by Herbert Gross, Handelsblatt has evolved into a central pillar of German economic reporting. Its ownership history reflects the consolidation of German media, transitioning through figures like Friedrich Vogel and Georg von Holtzbrinck before being acquired by Dieter von Holtzbrinck in 2009. Today, the publication, alongside its sister magazine Wirtschaftswoche, serves as a primary source for business and finance news, maintaining a daily circulation that reached 127,546 copies in 2018.
In 2014, the group launched the Handelsblatt Global Edition to provide international readers with insights into German commerce. The project underwent significant strategic shifts, particularly under editor-in-chief Andreas Kluth in 2017. Rather than simply translating German content, the team sought to adapt stories to fit the expectations of Anglophone journalistic traditions. Despite rebranding as Handelsblatt Today in 2018, the venture struggled to secure a viable business model or the necessary audience scale to sustain operations, leading to its closure in February 2019.
The publication has also faced scrutiny regarding its editorial accuracy. In early 2021, it reported that the Oxford–AstraZeneca vaccine showed minimal efficacy in older adults. This claim was quickly challenged by the developers and the German Health Ministry, which explained that the figure cited actually represented a specific age demographic within the clinical trial data. Experts in science communication criticized the outlet for framing the error as a balanced debate rather than acknowledging the factual inaccuracy, highlighting the risks inherent in high-stakes financial and scientific reporting.
