How a post-war German publisher became a global media powerhouse
In short: From a 1946 startup to a multinational giant, Axel Springer SE has shaped European discourse for decades. While its flagship tabloid, Bild, commands massive audiences, the company’s journey involves massive acquisitions, shifting market shares, and a legacy of intense political controversy.
Founded in 1946 by journalist Axel Springer and Hinrich Springer, the company began with publications like Nordwestdeutsche Hefte. Over the decades, it expanded through strategic acquisitions, such as the 1953 purchase of Die Welt and the 1959 takeover of Ullstein Verlag. The company’s footprint grew from local German newspapers to an international presence operating in more than 40 countries.
The company's portfolio is highly diverse, spanning news media, classifieds, and marketing. Its flagship tabloid, Bild, remains Europe's highest-circulation newspaper, with a daily readership exceeding 12 million. While the company held a 23.6% German market share for daily newspapers in 2004, that share had decreased to 10.6% by 2022. Today, its digital reach is immense; by June 2023, BILD received 504 million monthly visits, and WELT achieved 127 million.
The publisher's influence has not been without friction. In 1968, following the attack on student leader Rudi Dutschke, the Extra-Parliamentary Opposition (APO) targeted the company due to perceived biased coverage of the student movement. This period of animosity was marked by violence against the group, fueled by reports regarding the death of Benno Ohnesorg. Despite these historical tensions, the company has continued to scale, notably through the 2021 acquisition of the US political site Politico and a 2020 majority-stake acquisition by the US private-equity firm KKR, which helped drive revenues up by approximately €1 billion.
Financially, the group remains a significant player in the European Union. In the first half of 2023, the company reported total revenues of about €3.93 billion, alongside a 12.8% increase in EBITDA.
