A night courier, a tabloid reporter, and a journalist uncover a decades-old conspiracy.
In short: In the South Korean series Healer, three unlikely allies cross paths while investigating a 1992 incident involving an illegal pro-democracy radio station. As they navigate present-day murders and media corruption, they transform from cynical survivors into honest reporters, fighting to expose the truth behind a dark, hidden past.
The story centers on a mysterious illegal night courier known as Healer, played by Ji Chang-wook. Equipped with advanced technology and elite combat skills, he operates under a strict code, avoiding murder while working toward a solitary retirement on a remote island. His life shifts when a famous journalist, Kim Mun-ho, hires him to protect a young, aspiring reporter named Chae Young-shin. This assignment forces the courier to confront his own history and the secrets of the people who shaped his life.
At the heart of the narrative is a 1992 incident involving five friends who operated an illegal pro-democracy broadcasting station during South Korea's Fifth Republic. The consequences of this period were devastating, resulting in the deaths of two friends and the permanent injury of a third. In the present, this past remains a shadow over the characters, particularly Kim Mun-ho, who carries immense guilt for failing to fully investigate the truth at the time. He now seeks to find Oh Ji-an, a child long presumed dead, who is revealed to be the traumatized but resilient Chae Young-shin.
As the trio investigates, they face off against powerful media figures and a shadowy antagonist known as The Elder, the CEO of Omega Holdings. The series explores the tension between truth and reality, depicting the characters' evolution as they challenge media honchos to bring suppressed history to light. While the show initially aired on KBS2 from December 2014 to February 2015 with modest domestic ratings, it found a significant international audience, effectively launching Ji Chang-wook’s career beyond Korea.
