In short: In the remote reaches of Tierra del Fuego, two pioneering female officers from the Chilean tax police arrive at a sprawling ranch. What begins as a routine investigation into a stolen thoroughbred horse quickly descends into a dangerous web of political intrigue, hidden Nazi connections, and long-buried secrets.

Set against the backdrop of the 1930s, Helga y Flora explores a transformative era in Chile, where women were only beginning to secure their political and labor rights. The narrative follows Helga Gunkel and Flora Gutiérrez, the first women to serve in the national tax police. Their inaugural assignment takes them to Kerren, a vast ranch on the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, owned by the powerful German immigrant Raymond Gamper. While the official mission is to recover a prize horse, the detectives soon realize that Gamper’s influence extends over the entire region, and the government suspects him of clandestine ties to Nazi Germany.

The production process for the series was as challenging as the setting itself. Filming began in March 2018 but faced significant delays due to the unforgiving climate of the Magallanes Region, forcing a production pause in May. Work resumed in November and finally concluded in December 2018. The project received substantial financial support in 2016 from the Chilean National Television Council, which provided over 485 million pesos to bring this historical drama to the screen. The series eventually premiered on Canal 13 in April 2020.

Beyond the central mystery of the stolen horse, the show delves into a complex tapestry of local secrets. As the investigators peel back layers of deception, they encounter a criminal seeking vengeance, triggering a chain of violent events that the local community prefers to ignore. Helga and Flora must navigate this hostile environment, where the truth is often buried under layers of silence. Their pursuit of justice turns into a high-stakes puzzle, forcing them to risk their lives to expose the dark reality hidden within the isolated ranch and the surrounding wilderness.
