The Hell Priest's quest for power and the end of Hell
In short: In Clive Barker's 2015 horror epic, a demonic entity seeks to amass every magical secret on Earth. As the Hell Priest hunts magicians and invades the Wastelands, a cosmic struggle unfolds that threatens to destroy the very foundations of the underworld.
Clive Barker's novel, The Scarlet Gospels, serves as a massive continuation of his established mythos, linking the novella The Hellbound Heart with his Harry D'Amour series. The plot follows the Hell Priest—a character famously nicknamed 'Pinhead' by fans, a title the author personally disliked—as he systematically murders the world's magicians to steal their arcane knowledge. This campaign of violence forces the remaining practitioners to attempt a resurrection of the mage Ragowski, an act that inadvertently alerts the Priest to their location.
The narrative escalates into a cosmic upheaval when a portal to Hell opens in Manhattan. The Hell Priest's ambitions lead him into the Wastelands, a forbidden region of Hell, where he discovers a cathedral believed to be the throne room of Lucifer. In a dramatic turn, the Priest discovers the cathedral is actually Lucifer's tomb, the site of the fallen angel's suicide following his exile from God. By stripping Lucifer of his armor, the Priest briefly declares himself the new Lord of Hell, but the act inadvertently resurrects the Devil.
The ensuing conflict results in the total destruction of Hell. Lucifer, enraged by his forced return to existence, battles the Priest and eventually crushes all of Hell's inhabitants beneath a collapsing stone sky. While the Hell Priest is ultimately eliminated by an unseen force, the aftermath leaves the detective Harry D'Amour permanently blinded and struggling with alcoholism, even as he begins a new role as a medium for the deceased.
