A romantic comedy built on a wager, a yellow diamond, and classic dating mistakes.
In short: In the 2003 hit How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, two professionals pursue a relationship with hidden agendas. One aims to drive a partner away for a magazine column, while the other bets he can make anyone fall in love. Their collision creates a high-stakes game of romantic sabotage.
Directed by Donald Petrie, the film stars Kate Hudson as Andie Anderson, a magazine writer seeking to escape fluff pieces for serious journalism, and Matthew McConaughey as Benjamin Barry, an advertising executive desperate to land a diamond campaign. The plot hinges on their dueling motivations: Andie attempts to repel Ben using common dating blunders, while Ben tries to secure her affection to win a professional wager. Their paths are orchestrated by rival coworkers who know exactly how to manipulate the situation.
The production is perhaps best remembered for its aesthetic choices, particularly the iconic butter-yellow silk gown designed by Carolina Herrera. This backless piece was crafted specifically to showcase the Isadora Diamond, an 80-carat yellow stone designed by Harry Winston and valued at $6 million. The film's interiors were envisioned by sculptor Zoë Waterman, who aimed to create spaces that felt like dream environments, reportedly conceptualizing the designs in just fifteen minutes.
While critics were divided, offering mixed reviews that praised the chemistry between the leads but criticized the predictable script, the film was a significant financial success. It grossed $177.5 million worldwide against a production budget of $60 million. Interestingly, the project originally looked quite different; early development involved Gwyneth Paltrow and director Mike Newell, though scheduling conflicts led to the eventual casting of Hudson and the hiring of Petrie. By the end of 2003, the home video release had already sold nearly 3.8 million copies.
