How Dean DeBlois brought his animated Viking world into the realm of live action
In short: The 2025 live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon marks a rare creative homecoming. Director Dean DeBlois, who helmed the original 2010 animated feature, returned to helm this ambitious reimagining. By blending practical puppetry with advanced gimbal technology, the production sought to ground its mythical creatures in physical reality.
The journey to bring the Isle of Berk to life began in February 2023, when Universal Pictures announced the project. Dean DeBlois agreed to direct only under the condition of maintaining full creative control. The production faced significant hurdles, including a delay caused by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which pushed the release date from March 2025 to June 13, 2025. Filming took place in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and utilized the Faroe Islands for key aerial sequences.
To achieve a sense of realism, the production relied on practical sets and on-set puppetry led by Tom Wilton. This allowed actors like Mason Thames and Nico Parker to interact with physical proxies rather than empty air. For flight scenes, the team employed eight-axis gimbals, enabling actors to simulate the unique movements of dragon flight. Gerard Butler, the only returning lead from the animated cast, donned a massive 90-pound costume to embody the chieftain Stoick the Vast.
The film proved to be a commercial success, grossing $636.4 million worldwide and becoming the second-highest-grossing hybrid film in history. Beyond the spectacle, the production carried personal weight; it was dedicated to the memory of Margaret Coll, the mother of Gerard Butler, who passed away in February 2025 at 81. With a score by veteran composer John Powell and visual effects by Framestore, the project aimed to translate a beloved animated narrative into a tangible, high-stakes cinematic experience.
