How a submarine thriller spent years in development hell before hitting the screen
In short: The 2018 action film Hunter Killer faced a turbulent journey from its 2008 script acquisition to its eventual release. Despite featuring stars like Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman, the production struggled through years of director changes, casting shifts, and financial hurdles before finally reaching theaters to mixed critical reception.
The path to producing Hunter Killer was notably protracted. Relativity Media acquired the spec script, based on the 2012 novel Firing Point, in 2008. Over the following years, the project saw several directors attached, including Phillip Noyce and Antoine Fuqua, while actors like Gerard Butler and Sam Worthington were linked to the film at various stages. The production repeatedly stalled, entering a period of development hell as directors such as McG and Steven Quale passed on the material. It was not until 2016 that Donovan Marsh was confirmed as director, with a final cast including Butler, Gary Oldman, and Michael Nyqvist.
Filming commenced in July 2016 across London and Bulgaria. To create an authentic submarine environment, the production team built interior sets for a Virginia-class vessel at Ealing Studios, utilizing U.S. Navy-approved blueprints. These sets were mounted on gimbals to mimic the motion of the sea, while exterior shots were captured in a massive 806,000-gallon water tank at Pinewood Studios. Interestingly, despite the focus on military realism, the costume department opted for A-TACS FG camouflage, a pattern not actually utilized by the U.S. Navy.
Upon its October 2018 release, the film faced significant geopolitical friction. Ukraine denied the film an exhibition license, citing a law against popularizing Russian state security organs, as the film depicted a positive image of a Russian president and admiral. Meanwhile, in Russia, the film failed to secure a license due to submission delays and quality issues. Commercially, the film struggled, grossing $31.7 million worldwide against a projected opening that marked one of Butler's lowest debuts. Critics were largely unimpressed, labeling it a by-the-numbers actioner, though audiences offered more favorable ratings.
