In short: When director Robert Aldrich reunited Bette Davis and Joan Crawford for a follow-up to their previous hit, the set became a battleground. After months of delays, illness, and lawsuits, Crawford was fired and replaced by Olivia de Havilland, leaving behind only a fleeting, accidental glimpse of the original star.

Following the 1962 success of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, director Robert Aldrich sought to capitalize on the same dark, manipulative themes. He envisioned a new project starring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, based on an unpublished short story by Henry Farrell. However, the production of the 1964 film Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte was plagued by the infamous, legendary turbulence between the two leads. Principal photography, which began on May 18, 1964, was repeatedly stalled by lawsuits and Crawford's reported health issues, leading Aldrich to even hire a private investigator to verify her condition.

By August 4, 1964, the production was suspended indefinitely, forcing the studio to demand a replacement for Crawford. After other actresses like Vivien Leigh declined, Aldrich flew to Switzerland to recruit Olivia de Havilland. De Havilland later admitted she felt reverse-typecast as the villain and was not proud of the role, though she accepted it to support Davis. Despite the recasting, a wide shot of Miriam’s arrival still features Crawford, who reportedly learned of her firing via a news radio broadcast.

The film, which earned seven Academy Award nominations—a record for a horror film at the time—was a critical and financial success. It grossed $4,950,000 against a break-even requirement of $3,900,000. While some critics like Bosley Crowther dismissed it as "brutally sickening," others praised the performances, particularly Agnes Moorehead, who won a Golden Globe for her role. Ultimately, the film remains a testament to a volatile era of Hollywood, where the behind-the-scenes drama was as intense as the onscreen horror.
