Marvel's founding X-Man Iceman was originally conceived as a mirror of the Human Torch.
In short: Bobby Drake, the founding X-Men member known as Iceman, began as a simple elemental copy of the Human Torch. Yet, his journey evolved far beyond his icy origins, spanning decades of complex team dynamics, Omega-level power growth, and a deeply personal struggle to reconcile his identity as a gay mutant.
Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Iceman first appeared in The X-Men #1 in September 1963. Lee later admitted that the character was essentially a mirror image of the Human Torch, swapping fire for ice. Born in Floral Park, New York, to William and Madeline Drake, Bobby’s powers manifested when he froze a bully to protect a date, leading to his incarceration by a fearful local sheriff before Professor Charles Xavier intervened to recruit him.
Throughout his history, Iceman has been a versatile team player, serving with the Champions, the Defenders, and X-Factor. His powers have fluctuated significantly; once, Loki enhanced his abilities to manipulate Frost Giants, leaving Bobby with limited control until he used a dampening belt. Later, he achieved Omega-level status, demonstrating the ability to absorb ice creatures and even pull himself back together after being shattered. His personal life has been equally tumultuous, marked by strained relationships with his parents and, in 2015, a pivotal storyline where he came out as gay.
The revelation of his sexuality occurred in All-New X-Men #40, when a time-displaced younger version of himself was outed by Jean Grey. This forced the adult Bobby to confront his long-standing repression, driven by fears of facing dual prejudices as both a mutant and a gay man. His journey toward self-acceptance became a central theme in his 2017 solo series. Despite facing near-total destruction—such as being melted by cellular napalm during the third annual Hellfire Gala—Bobby has consistently returned, often relying on his connections to others, like his former partner Romeo, to maintain his physical and mental cohesion.
