In short: Cain Marko, Marvel's Juggernaut, is not a mutant but a human empowered by a mystical gem. His name derives from the deity Jagannath, whose massive, unstoppable chariot inspired the character's core concept: a force of nature that cannot be halted, regardless of what or who stands in its path.

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Juggernaut debuted in X-Men #12 in July 1965. Cain Marko is the stepbrother of Professor X, a relationship defined by childhood abuse from their father, Kurt Marko. While serving in the US Army in Korea, Cain discovered a hidden temple containing the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak. Upon reading an inscription on the gem, he was transformed into a human juggernaut, gaining immense strength and durability. This origin story established him as a physical powerhouse who could shrug off the X-Men's mansion defenses and brush aside the team with ease.

The character's powers are rooted in magic rather than biology. As an avatar of the deity Cyttorak, Marko possesses superhuman strength capable of shattering mountains and lifting buildings. He does not require food, water, or oxygen and is virtually immune to physical harm, protected further by a helmet that shields his mind from telepathic intrusion. While he has been a prominent member of the Brotherhood of Mutants, his status as a non-mutant has historically complicated his standing within the X-Men's world, leading to his initial denial of citizenship on the mutant nation of Krakoa.

Juggernaut's history is marked by shifting allegiances and mystical conflicts. He has battled icons like Spider-Man, the Hulk, and Doctor Strange, and has been banished to alternate dimensions like the Crimson Cosmos. His power levels fluctuate; he has served as one of the Exemplars and even briefly wielded the Uni-Power as Captain Universe. Despite his villainous roots, he has attempted redemption multiple times, joining the X-Men and working with teams like the Thunderbolts. Even after the destruction of the Gem of Cyttorak, Marko found ways to restore his powers, eventually earning Krakoan citizenship and fighting alongside the X-Men against the organization Orchis.
