How a French dance album became an intergalactic anime odyssey
In short: In 2003, Daft Punk transformed their second studio album, Discovery, into a wordless science fiction epic. By pairing their electronic beats with Toei Animation's artistry, they merged the worlds of dance music and anime to tell a story of abduction, memory loss, and cosmic rebellion.
The film, titled Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, serves as a visual companion to Daft Punk's Discovery album. Rather than using dialogue, the film uses the entirety of the album's tracks to drive a narrative about an extraterrestrial pop band. In this narrative, an Earthly military unit commanded by the villain Earl de Darkwood captures blue-skinned humanoids, specifically keyboardist Octave, guitarist Arpegius, drummer Baryl, and bassist Stella.
The production was a massive international collaboration. Written by Daft Punk and Cédric Hervet, the film was produced by Toei Animation and directed by Kazuhisa Takenouchi. It was supervised by Leiji Matsumoto, whose animation style heavily influenced the project. The production, which began in October 2000 and concluded in April 2003, reportedly cost $4 million.
The story explores themes of identity and oppression. After being captured, the band members have their memories transferred into disks and replaced with false ones, while their skin is altered to appear human. They are manipulated into becoming a popular human band called The Crescendolls. The narrative concludes with a space pilot named Shep attempting to rescue the band and restore their true identities.
Technological shifts have also impacted the film's legacy. Due to original master issues and encoding difficulties between NTSC and PAL, a 4K remaster was created in 2024 using artificial intelligence. While this allowed for a global theatrical rollout in over 1,500 venues, the use of AI upscaling was met with criticism from some fans.
