In short: Before he was a cinematic icon, Krishnan Nair was a Master Chief Petty Officer in the Indian Navy. His transition from maritime service to the silver screen created a machismo-fueled phenomenon so powerful that his name alone could guarantee box-office success, even when scripts were secondary to his stunts.

Jayan's journey began far from the spotlight. Born in 1939, he served 16 years in the Indian Navy, eventually reaching the rank of Master CPO. His naval background provided a foundation for the physical prowess that would later define his career. He was even part of the team that traveled to Great Britain in 1961 to receive India's first warship, INS Vikrant. It wasn't until a chance meeting with Rajan Prakash—son of veteran actor Jose Prakash—that he landed his first role in 'Shapa Moksham'. His rise was meteoric. After debuting as a villain in 1976, Jayan catapulted to superstardom with the antihero role in 'Sarapancharam' (1979). This film broke all existing box-office records in Malayalam cinema. By 1980, he had achieved a 'genuine superhero image,' characterized by his masculine physique, signature Elvis bellbottoms, and high-risk stunts. He was known for performing dangerous feats without safety measures, such as jumping onto moving trains in 'Puthiya Velicham' (1979) or swimming through the Hogenakkal Falls in 'Aavesham'. The era of his peak dominance is still referred to as the "Jayan years" (1979–1981). Despite a near 90% success rate, critics often noted that many of these films lacked strong plots, relying instead on Jayan's 'drawing power.' His career ended tragically in November 1980 during a stunt for the film 'Kolilakkam,' where he died at age 41 after insisting on an extra take of a helicopter boarding scene. His death left such a void that producers attempted to use impostors and dubbed voices to continue his persona, eventually leading to the debut of actors who mimicked his specific style.
