How a disgraced Fire Nation general became the moral compass of an entire world

In short: Once a formidable military commander, Iroh abandoned his siege of Ba Sing Se after the tragic death of his son. Transforming from a conqueror into a mentor, he rejected the throne to guide his nephew, Zuko, eventually becoming a legendary figure of peace, wisdom, and tea-loving introspection.

Iroh was the firstborn son of Fire Lord Azulon and a celebrated general of the Fire Nation. His life shifted dramatically during the Hundred Year War when his only son, Lu Ten, died at the siege of Ba Sing Se. This loss shattered Iroh’s ambition, leading him to abandon the campaign and retreat from military life. While his brother Ozai used this period of mourning to orchestrate a coup against their father, Iroh remained disinterested in state affairs, ultimately acquiescing to Ozai’s rule to avoid civil war.

Though feared as 'The Dragon of the West'—a title earned through his firebending prowess and a fabricated story about killing the world's last dragons—Iroh was secretly a pupil of the final two dragons, Ran and Shao. From them, he learned to derive power from vitality rather than the rage that fueled his contemporaries. As a Grand Lotus in the Order of the White Lotus, he eventually fulfilled his childhood vision of capturing Ba Sing Se, not as a conqueror, but as a liberator who freed the city from Fire Nation control.

Iroh’s legacy is defined by his profound influence on his nephew, Zuko, whom he mentored through exile. He taught Zuko to redirect lightning, a technique he derived from studying waterbending, and encouraged him to seek a path of honor distinct from the callousness of his sister, Azula. Even after the war, Iroh’s wisdom continued to resonate; he declined the throne, founded a tea shop, and eventually transcended the physical realm to reside in the Spirit World, where he offered guidance to the next generation of Avatars.
