Why a city apartment balcony is the perfect place for a pet pony
In short: Annie is a nine-year-old navigating the complexities of urban life while living on her parents' apartment balcony. Her constant companion is a pony whose boundless enthusiasm and relentless optimism frequently drag them into chaotic, unwanted situations. It is an absurd premise that manages to be both charming and genuinely entertaining.
Created by Ant Blades and produced by the British studio Blue Zoo Animation, It's Pony began its life as a short film within the Nickelodeon Animated Shorts Program. Following its successful development, the network green-lit a full series in March 2018. The show officially premiered on Nickelodeon in January 2020, bringing the story of a girl and her unconventional pet to a wider audience.
The narrative structure centers on the contrast between Annie's attempts to manage her daily life and the unpredictable nature of her pony. While the pony is not exactly a model of grace or traditional equine behavior, the bond between the two remains the heart of the show. Critics have noted that the series leans heavily into absurdity to generate humor, yet it maintains a high level of quality that keeps viewers engaged.
The show spanned two seasons, each consisting of 20 episodes. The second season made its debut in October 2021, and the final installment of the series aired on Nicktoons in May 2022. Despite its run, the show faced changes in the streaming landscape; in March 2024, it was pulled from Paramount+ as the platform shifted its strategy toward content with broader global appeal. This move marked a quiet end to the broadcast life of a unique animated project.
Ultimately, the series stands as an example of how a simple, strange concept—a farm animal living in a city apartment—can be expanded into a multi-season production. By focusing on the specific, often messy dynamic between a young girl and her overly eager pony, the show carved out a niche that prioritized character-driven comedy over traditional storytelling tropes.
