From Wall Street titan to the helm of the Walt Disney Company
In short: After decades of steering Morgan Stanley through massive mergers and global shifts, Australian-American financier James P. Gorman is moving from high finance to entertainment leadership. His transition to Chairman of the Walt Disney Company marks a significant new chapter for one of the most influential figures in global banking.
James P. Gorman’s career is defined by massive institutional scale and strategic integration. After joining Morgan Stanley in February 2006, he played a pivotal role in creating one of the world's largest wealth management platforms. He facilitated the unification of Citi's Smith Barney with Morgan Stanley's wealth management division, finishing the purchase of the last 35% of Smith Barney during June 2013. His strategic vision helped expand the firm's reach through multibillion-dollar acquisitions of Eaton Vance Corp. and E*trade Financial Corp. in 2020.
Under his leadership, Morgan Stanley grew to include over 16,000 financial advisors and managed approximately $1.8 trillion in client assets. His tenure was not without scrutiny; in 2020, the firm faced a class action lawsuit from former Managing Director Marilyn Booker, who alleged widespread racial and sexual discrimination. The lawsuit, which alleged a culture of indifference toward minority employees, was settled in May 2021 on undisclosed terms. This legal challenge highlighted concerns regarding the declining budget of the Urban Markets Group. Such issues were linked to a significant decrease in Black financial advisors within the company.
Gorman’s influence extends far beyond the trading floor. He has served on the board of the Council on Foreign Relations and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in January 2020. Following his retirement as CEO of Morgan Stanley in December 2023, he moved into a role as executive chairman before being named Chairman of the Walt Disney Company, effective January 2, 2025. Beyond his corporate roles, he has held leadership positions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association. He also served as a director for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
