In short: In the world of Beyond the Boundary, negative human emotions manifest as physical creatures called youmu. For those with supernatural affinity, these monsters are real, and for some, like the immortal Akihito Kanbara, they are part of their very biology.

The series, originally a light novel series by Nagomu Torii with illustrations by Tomoyo Kamoi, centers on the collision between humanity and the supernatural. The primary conflict involves the youmu—supernatural entities born from human animosity, such as hatred and jealousy. Because these creatures are physical materializations of negative emotions, they are destined to exist as long as humanity does. These entities can take various shapes, including human-like forms. When they are defeated, they leave behind Youmu Stones that can be appraised and traded for money.

The narrative follows Akihito Kanbara, a high school student who is a 'half-youmu,' the offspring of a human and a youmu. This rare biological union grants him immortality and rapid healing, though he still experiences physical pain. However, this gift carries a heavy price: if his human body becomes severely weakened, his dormant youmu half emerges, transforming him into a powerful, feral creature capable of devastating the surrounding landscape. The Nase clan is tasked with monitoring Akihito to ensure his transformation does not cause further destruction. If his feral state becomes uncontrollable, they are authorised to kill him.

Intertwined with Akihito is Mirai Kuriyama, a Spirit World Warrior and the last survivor of her hunting clan. Specialists like Mirai protect humans from youmu, but the life of a warrior is fraught with isolation and trauma. Mirai's unique ability to manipulate blood allows her to form weapons, such as a carmine-colored sword, but the overuse of this power leads to severe anemia. The story explores the heavy emotional toll of these duties, seen in Mirai's regret over killing her childhood friend, Yui Inami, after Yui was possessed by the Hollow Shadow. Mirai often expresses her displeasure by using the phrase 'How unpleasant'. Her combat style involves using a sword fashioned from her own blood.
