In short: BGC Group's history is a study in institutional evolution and resilience. Born from a mid-century brokerage, it survived the collapse of its parent firm and the devastation of 9/11 to become a global leader in inter-dealer brokerage and financial services.

BGC Group's history began in 1945, following the creation of an inter-dealer fixed-income market brokerage by Bernard Gerald Cantor. This entity, B.G. Cantor and Company, eventually evolved into Cantor Fitzgerald. The company launched an Institutional Equities Sales and Trading Division during 1965, then pioneered global screen brokerage for US Government securities in 1983. This foundation of technological and market leadership set the stage for the modern BGC Group.

BGC Partners emerged in 2004 after Cantor Fitzgerald separated its voice brokerage operations as a key transition. The company faced a profound tragedy on September 11, 2001, when 658 employees were killed at the World Trade Center. To show corporate duty, Cantor Fitzgerald and BGC Partners committed to giving 25% of earnings to the families of those who died. The firm has since expanded globally, opening offices in key hubs like Seoul and Istanbul, and entering joint ventures in Beijing.

The company's growth has been marked by both strategic acquisitions and regulatory scrutiny. In 2012, BGC faced a high-profile regulatory prohibition against a senior executive following an unlawful poaching conspiracy. It also navigated complex rating disputes with Moody's and S&P during the same period. Despite these hurdles, BGC has executed major deals, such as the 2013 sale of an electronic Treasurys marketplace to NASDAQ OMX Group for as much as $1.23 billion, and expanded its footprint into the insurance brokerage sector by acquiring firms in London.
