The mouse who stole the show: How Jerry became an unlikely Hollywood dance icon
In short: While known as a silent cartoon rival to Tom, Jerry Mouse once danced alongside Gene Kelly in a live-action musical. This rotoscoped performance in 1945 was so successful it launched a series of hybrid projects, proving the brown house mouse was far more than just a cowering victim of his feline frenemy.
Created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, Jerry first appeared in the 1940 short Puss Gets the Boot. Though initially unnamed or referred to as Jinx or Pee-Wee, he eventually became the iconic Jerry. Unlike typical cat-and-mouse tropes of the era, Hanna and Barbera designed a dynamic where Jerry often delighted in antagonizing Tom, creating a rivalry that masked an unspoken mutual respect.
Jerry’s transition into live-action began with the 1945 musical Anchors Aweigh. MGM originally wanted Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse for the dance sequence, but after Disney declined, they turned to Jerry. To achieve the effect of Gene Kelly dancing with a mouse, the team used rotoscoping, tracing the live-action footage frame by frame. The segment was a critical success, leading to further collaborations like the 1953 underwater ballet in Dangerous When Wet and the 1956 Sinbad sequence in Invitation to the Dance.
Despite his reputation as a silent character, Jerry has been voiced by dozens of actors over the decades. Co-creator William Hanna provided his vocal effects from 1940 to 1958, and archival recordings of his work have been used in productions as recent as the 2021 film. Other notable contributors include Sara Berner, who voiced him in Anchors Aweigh, and Mel Blanc, who provided vocal effects during the Chuck Jones era in the 1960s.
The character has evolved significantly since his debut. He has been depicted as a musketeer in 17th-century France, a foundling guardian to a mouse named Tuffy, and even a modern 2D character interacting with live-action humans in the 2021 film. Throughout these iterations, his full name was eventually established as Jerome A. Mouse, cementing his status as a permanent fixture in animation history.
