From football scholarships to the top of the Billboard charts
In short: Before he was a critically acclaimed rapper, Destin Choice Route was an NCAA Division I football prospect. His journey from the pizza delivery lines of Atlanta to headlining global tours is a masterclass in artistic persistence and the evolution of modern hip-hop.
Born in Atlanta in 1989, Route adopted the moniker JID from his grandmother, who gave him the nickname due to his 'jittery' behavior. His musical foundation was built on a diverse palette: his parents' collection of classic funk and soul LPs, including Sly and the Family Stone and Earth, Wind & Fire, eventually transitioning into the 1990s New York hip-hop scene. This eclectic upbringing informed a fluent rapping style and sophisticated wordplay that have earned him widespread critical acclaim.
Route's path to stardom was non-linear. After a high school football career that saw him dislocate his hip, he earned a full athletic scholarship to Hampton University. However, he was kicked off the team after two seasons for skipping practices. He pivoted to music, funding his early career by working in call centers and delivering pizza. During this period, he formed the collective Spillage Village and released several self-released projects before signing with J. Cole's Dreamville Records in 2017.
Since signing with Dreamville, JID has achieved significant commercial and critical milestones. His 2021 single 'Enemy' with Imagine Dragons peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100, marking his highest-charting song. His recent album, God Does Like Ugly (2025), debuted in the top 15 of the Billboard 200 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album. His trajectory highlights a transition from underground mixtape culture to a major presence in the global music industry.
