In short: Created in 1940, Tom Cat evolved from a four-legged house pet into an elastic, anthropomorphic force of nature. While he is famous for his silence, his trademark screams of pain became a legendary stock sound effect, defining the chaotic, slapstick legacy of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's most iconic animated rivalry.

Thomas Jasper Cat Sr. made his debut in the 1940 short Puss Gets the Boot, though he was initially named Jasper. It was not until the subsequent short, The Midnight Snack, that he adopted the name Tom. Over the decades, his physical appearance underwent significant shifts; he transitioned from walking on all fours to a bipedal stance following the 1940s short Dog Trouble. Early versions featured distinct white fur between his eyes, a detail that was eventually abandoned in later iterations of the character.

Tom is defined by his superhuman elasticity and his perpetual, often futile, pursuit of Jerry Mouse. While he is frequently the victim of his own backfiring schemes—sometimes resulting in his explosive demise—he occasionally outwits his adversaries. His interactions extend beyond Jerry to include characters like Spike Bulldog, who often intervenes to assist the mouse. Despite his usual silence, Tom is known for his piercing screams, which were originally recorded by creator William Hanna and subsequently repurposed as stock audio for various other cartoon characters.

The character's vocal history is remarkably diverse, spanning decades of performances. While William Hanna provided his iconic vocal effects during the original era, numerous actors have contributed to his legacy, ranging from Harry E. Lang and Mel Blanc to more recent performers like Richard Kind and Spike Brandt. Tom has also transcended the medium of short films, appearing in feature-length musicals like Anchors Aweigh and Dangerous When Wet, and eventually interacting with live-action actors in the 2021 film, where his full name was revealed as Thomas D. Cat.
