How a five-year-old became a global recording star
In short: At just five years old, Jimmy Osmond was already making waves in the music industry. Before he could even enter adulthood, he had achieved a gold record in Japan and set a Guinness World Record for the youngest performer to top the UK charts.
Born in Canoga Park, California, on April 16, 1963, Jimmy Osmond was the youngest of nine children born to Olive and George Osmond. While his siblings were born in Ogden, Utah, Jimmy was the only one of the nine to be born elsewhere. His professional life required a rigorous education, provided by tutors and his sister-in-law, Mary Osmond.
His early career was marked by extraordinary milestones. At age five, he became the first member of the Osmond family to earn a gold record, achieved by recording 'My Little Darling' in Japanese. By 1972, he had reached the pinnacle of the UK Singles Chart with 'Long Haired Lover from Liverpool.' This achievement led the Guinness Book of World Records to name him the youngest performer to secure a number one single in the UK.
Beyond his early success as 'Little Jimmy' or 'Jimmy Boy' in Japan, Osmond's career has been remarkably diverse. He has recorded in Spanish, starred in films like 'The Great Brain' in 1978, and appeared in various television productions. In recent years, he has transitioned into business leadership as the president of Osmond Entertainment and has appeared on several UK reality television programs, including 'I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!' and 'Celebrity Masterchef.'
Despite facing health challenges, including a stroke in 2004 and another in late 2018, Osmond has remained active in business. As of 2024, his nephew Nathan reports that he is happily retired and enjoying life as a family man.
