In short: Before she was a television mainstay, Lassie was a short story character. From her 1938 origins to becoming one of the few animals to earn a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, this fictional collie has navigated decades of media, evolving from a novel into a global brand.

The character's journey began with English author Eric Knight, who published the short story 'Lassie Come-Home' in The Saturday Evening Post on December 17, 1938. This was later expanded into a 1940 novel set in Depression-era England, depicting a Rough Collie's long trek to reunite with her young master. Interestingly, Knight's portrayal shares some traits with a collie from Elizabeth Gaskell's 1859 story, 'The Half Brothers'.

The transition to film began in 1943 when Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer adapted the novel into 'Lassie Come Home', starring Roddy McDowall and Elizabeth Taylor. The role was played by a dog named Pal. Pal's trainer, Rudd Weatherwax, eventually acquired the Lassie trademark from MGM and took the dog to rodeos and fairs in the early 1950s. This success paved the way for a long-running television series that debuted in 1954.

The television era saw the character evolve significantly over 19 years, moving from a family farm to working with U.S. Forest Service rangers, and eventually residing at a ranch for orphaned children. The series earned two Emmy Awards before concluding in 1973. Lassie's influence extended far beyond the screen, spawning comic books, board games, and animated series, including a 1996 anime and a 2014 2D/CGI production.

Lassie's cultural impact is cemented by her status as a rare non-human icon. In 2005, Variety named her one of the '100 Icons of the Century,' making her the only animal on that list.
