How a legal battle with Disney changed the name of a beloved pig
In short: Before it was known as Jakers!, this animated series was nearly titled Piggley Pooh. A legal dispute with The Walt Disney Company over the Winnie the Pooh franchise forced creators to rename their protagonist, leading to a unique storytelling structure that spans generations.
The series was originally conceived by Denise Fitzpatrick, inspired by her childhood experiences on a farm in rural Ireland. She initially intended to title the show and its main character Piggley Pooh. However, the Walt Disney Company issued a cease and desist letter due to the similarity to the Winnie the Pooh series. Although the Fitzpatrick family successfully countersued and won in the European Court, their legal counsel advised a name change to prevent future intellectual property issues. This resulted in the final title, Jakers! The Adventures of Piggley Winks.
The term "Jakers" itself is a linguistic derivation, stemming from the Irish interjection "Jaysus," which originates from Jesus. The show's narrative structure utilizes a dual-timeline approach. In the frame story, an elderly Piggley Winks lives in the United States and shares stories with his three grandchildren—Seán, Séamus, and Meg—to provide moral lessons. These flashbacks transport viewers back to the early 1950s in Ireland, where a young Piggley lived on Raloo Farm with his family and friends like Fernando "Ferny" Toro and Dannan O'Mallard.
The production was notable for being one of the first cartoons rendered in high definition. While much of the voice cast recorded in North Hollywood, California, at Salami Studios, several actors—including Brendan Gleeson and Fionnula Flanagan—recorded from Slate in Dublin, Ireland. The series was highly acclaimed, earning multiple Emmy Awards between 2006 and 2008, including honors for Outstanding Children's Animated Program and Outstanding Directing.
