From nu metal bassist to the face of The Masked Singer
In short: Before becoming a mainstay of British primetime television, Joel Dommett was a teenage musician in a nu metal band. His journey from minor acting roles and stand-up gigs in Los Angeles to hosting major national ceremonies reveals a rapid ascent through the UK entertainment landscape.
Born in 1985 in Gloucestershire, Dommett's early career was defined by a mix of minor acting roles and musical experimentation. As a teenager, he was a member of the nu metal band Psirus, a group that performed five shows before he transitioned into professional acting and stand-up comedy. His acting credits include roles in series such as Casualty and Skins, though he once discovered a scene in the film The Edge of Love had been cut. He moved to London at 19. His early work included roles in the plays Bashment and Stonewall. He also appeared in the sitcom Popatron.
Dommett's breakthrough into the mainstream occurred in April 2011 on Russell Howard's Good News. This momentum carried him through various reality and comedy formats. His profile rose during the sixteenth season of I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! He secured runner-up in 2016, trailing behind Scarlett Moffatt. This experience paved the way for his subsequent roles as a presenter for the franchise's spin-offs, including I'm a Celebrity: Extra Camp and I'm a Celebrity: Unpacked. He also appeared on the celebrity version of The Chase. Furthermore, he served as a team captain on Reality Bites.
By 2020, Dommett had become a central figure in major ITV productions, most notably as the presenter for The Masked Singer. His versatility is further evidenced by his work across different mediums, from hosting the National Television Awards to his involvement in radio on BBC Radio 2. Beyond the screen, he has explored memoir writing, detailing romantic encounters with 40 women before marrying his wife, Hannah Cooper, in 2019. He has also hosted the Survivor revival. Additionally, he is a patron for Shooting Star Children's Hospice.
