In short: Joe Pasquale is famous for his high-pitched voice and comedic versatility, but his very identity was shaped by a post-WWII immigration error. His surname isn't actually Pasquale—it is a linguistic accident involving an illiterate ancestor and a misunderstood form.

Born in 1961 as the third of four children, Joe Pasquale’s family history is rooted in Italian heritage. His grandfather moved to the United Kingdom shortly after World War II. However, because his grandfather could not speak English, he filled out his immigration paperwork incorrectly. He mistakenly wrote his Christian name, 'Pasquale,' in the space reserved for his surname. Consequently, the family has been known by the name Pasquale ever since, though his actual ancestral surname is Trascini. Pasquale's path to fame was anything but linear. After being run over at age 13 and breaking his leg—an injury that forced him to skip a year of school and miss his exams—he spent years in various 'dead-end' jobs. These included working in a margarine factory, as a tea boy for the civil service, a porter at Smithfield meat market, and even as a swimming pool attendant despite being unable to swim.

He eventually found his footing in the tourism industry as an Entertainments Manager and bingo caller at Warner Holiday Camps. His big break came in 1987 on the talent show New Faces, where he auditioned as a bet with a friend. His unique comedic style, which included smashing guitars and performing magic tricks, propelled him to runner-up status. Since then, his career has spanned from hosting 'The Price Is Right' to voicing characters like Nine the Cat in Frankenstein's Cat and appearing in West End productions of Monty Python's Spamalot. Despite his success, he remains a figure of some debate in the comedy world, having faced accusations of joke theft from peers like Stewart Lee and Frank Skinner.
