A spy thriller born from real intelligence experiences hits the Saudi Arabian desert
In short: The 2023 action film Kandahar blends high-stakes espionage with the personal history of its screenwriter, a former military intelligence officer. Shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, the production navigated complex geopolitical themes and desert landscapes, marking a significant milestone for big-budget American cinema filming in the region.
Kandahar, directed by Ric Roman Waugh and starring Gerard Butler, follows CIA operative Tom Harris after his cover is blown during a mission to sabotage an Iranian nuclear facility. The narrative, which sees Harris and his translator fleeing across Afghanistan, is loosely inspired by the experiences of screenwriter Mitchell LaFortune. LaFortune, a former Defense Intelligence Agency officer, originally penned the script under the title Burn Run in 2016, drawing on his 2013 deployment to Afghanistan during the Snowden leaks.
The film’s production was notable for being the first major U.S. feature to shoot in Saudi Arabia, specifically utilizing locations in Al-Ula and Jeddah. Filming began in December 2021 and concluded in January 2022, benefiting from the Saudi Film Commission's 40% cash rebate. This logistical feat brought together a diverse international cast, including Ali Fazal and Navid Negahban, to portray the complex web of intelligence agents, warlords, and military forces involved in the chase.
Upon its release on May 26, 2023, the film faced a crowded box office, debuting alongside titles like The Little Mermaid. While it achieved a worldwide gross of $9.4 million, critical reception remained mixed. Rotten Tomatoes reported a 45% approval rating, with critics noting that while Butler provides a reliable lead, the film struggled to distinguish itself within the crowded action genre. Despite this, audience feedback was more favorable, with CinemaScore awarding the film a B+ grade.
The story itself is a dense web of betrayal and survival, involving the CIA, the Iranian Special Forces, and the Pakistani ISI. As Harris attempts to reach an extraction point in Kandahar, he is pursued by Colonel Farzad Asadi and agent Kahil Nassir. The film culminates in a high-stakes rescue involving Afghan commandos and a final, unauthorized missile strike, highlighting the moral ambiguity often associated with modern covert operations.
